streaming media
I have used Slackware, Xandros and Ubuntu, but am not an expert at any of them. Here is what I want to do. I am currently using a windows laptop svid output connected to my tv to stream video e.g. meet the press, itunes purchases, diggnation, dl.tv etc. I want to replace the laptop with a dedicated machine. I am considerinig a mac mini, or a pc with windows media edition, but I would prefer to build a linux computer. Before commiting to that, I would like some advice. Most of the podcasts I stream come directly from the web site, but I use itunes for somethings. Is there something like itunes for linux? When I have tried to stream video using linux, I get a message saying I need windows media player. Does a linux player support this format? Will I have a problem getting the svid output to work with linux, or do I need a specific card for this? I was thinking of using ubuntu, but what distro would best support this use with the standard install?
