Strange wireless issues on Arch linux, sony vaio laptop

Hey everyone! first post on this forum

I have new installation of Arch on a Sony Vaio VPCS131FM; everything is working great except for the wireless. I'll connect to a wireless network and start a ping, say to my gateway IP. it will keep responding for ~1minute, and then drop completely. Same with browsing; once i connect i'll be able to load Google, and then the connection will die out, i wont be able to load any other pages or ping out. When this happens, it still says im connected to the wireless network (in the applet). If i disconnect and then reconnect to the network, the same thing happens all over again; ill be able to pass traffic for a brief period of time, and then it will die out. This does not seem to be specific to any sort of encryption type (WEP, WPA, open etc)

So far in my research, i havent been able to find another thread that has this same problem. I've only found a suggestion to try adding ipv6.disable=1 to the kernel header; did that, but no change

I have a similar problem on a Sony Vaio VPCSE13FX. I have been using a Trendnet wireless access point for travellers. When I connect the Sony the same thing happens as with you: ping times of 1 minute.

But other computers are not able to use the AP either. And often the connection simply stops working and I have to reset it. When I am not using the Vaio it is working perfectly for weeks with my Thinkpas T61, iphone and Asus EEEPC.

After I have been using the VAIO I need to reset the AP before it works again with other computers.

See also this: Bug#667432: (networkmanager detects wifi access point only after running iwlist)

Huh, that sounds very odd

Mine is looking like an issue with the software somewhere, maybe a bad version of something, i don't know
It has the same issue when connecting to another WAP i have. I was also recently dual booting Win7 and Ubuntu, had no issues with the wireless connectivity. I'm comfortable with the command line, but I've never had to do troubleshooting with the wireless so I'm inexperienced in that area; so far, anything I've loaded on the laptop has "just worked"; looks like my luck has run out lol!

When you are using the Sony VIO with wireless, do other wireless devices work?

I've had a problem similar to jlinkles problem, were all wireless devices start having a problem. Oddly, the problem disappears when I disconnect my laptops wired interface.

The nm-tool command will return useful information, such as signal strength and noise level.

Try using wireless with just the VIO connected to the router. Does the connection degrade after a time. If the time period is just as short, and only the VIO has the problem, I wonder if it might be a heat related problem with the VIO's wireless device.

Another thing to check is that you have bluetooth disabled.

Does this occur only at home, or does it also happen in a restaurant with open wireless?

The IPv6 idea sounds interesting. Is there a config file in /etc/sysconfig/network/ were it can be disabled as well? How about for the DHCPv6 client? Also KDE has a setting to disable IPv6. Usually you will have a long pause waiting for an IPv6 dns lookup to fail.

Good Luck.

You might want to search on Google, entering your exact wireless router's model number.

jschiwal - thank you for the reply, im pulling out my hair at this point lol.

The main WAP i've been trying to connect to is in use by other devices, and was able to connect to it fine with the Vaio when it had win7 / Ubuntu installed. I've tried it on another WAP as well, and WiFi tethered to my phone; all seem to have the same exact issue. The laptop has an Intel wireless card, and confirmed its using the iwlwifi driver. i just tried connecting again now with bluetooth disabled, same issue

I've tried searching (tried not to be a total n00b :P) but i've yet to find anything useful, other than a suggestion of disabling the ipv6 stack.

I may have found something interesting though; just ran "nm-tool" while connected to my wireless, and it returned the following:

Type: 802.11 WiFi
Driver: iwlwifi
State: connected
Default: yes
HW Address: 00:23:15:7D:42:F0

Capabilities:
Speed: 1 Mb/s

Wireless Properties
WEP Encryption: yes
WPA Encryption: yes
WPA2 Encryption: yes

Try rebooting the router, reconnecting, and running nm-tool again. I think the 1 mbps is for the connection, or router, not the device.

If other devices also have the problem, you may have a router problem.
Does it list capabilities when you aren't connected? What does "modinfo iwlwifi" say?

So i found something that seems to work, and im kicking myself for not trying it sooner. The wireless router i have was set to G/N mix (all the wifi cards in my house are N capable except for one). i just switched it to G only, and it worked! nm-tool is showing 54Mbps, and no issues so far. I guess the driver doesnt play nice negotiating with a router going g/n mix?

scratch that; i just switched the wireless router to n, and the same issue popped up again. switched it back to G, worked fine again. Looks like there's some issue with N specifically, i'll research more and see if i can find anything

First off, here's the output of modinfo iwlwifi (noted below), imissed your post earlier :P

just want to apologize for the rapid-fire posts ahead of time; i get really into it once i think i'm onto something :P

Out of curiosity I forced the rate to 54Mbps on the wlan0 with the router set to use N, but i still get the same problem. rebooted and checked all other devices, this laptop's still the only one having the issue . I know it would just be a "band-aid", but does anyone know a way to force wlan0 to use 802.11G?

jschiwal - here's the output:

Quick update - I've been researching in my free time, but still no solution in fact, the only other post I've been able to find with the same issue is this one --> http://usalug.com/phpBB3//viewtopic.php?f=16&t=15792

i tried connecting the laptop to a friend's wifi connection at his house; it works fine on G, but not on N or G/N mix

I just ordered a new Cisco WRT160NL WAP. After I finish installing I will report what I see.

I don't know how you feel, but I am so disappointed with this VAIO. It was expensive, but the keyboard feels cheap, it runs hot, there is a lot of fan noise, webcam is worse than anything else I have seen, internal mic is unusable due to fan noise. And that is only what I noticed while installing. I am not even using it now, but reverted to my old faithful Lenovo. And yes, I did disable the Radeon VGA.

So far im liking the Vaio, although i do share a concern with the heat issue; when it's under heavy load i have to put it on the desk, to hot to actually be on my lap. Other than that though, no issues to report, the battery lasts a lot longer than i thought it would. The only thing i dont like is that it had Windows on it

Anyways, still scratching my head over this issue; at this point i know its not an issue with the wireless router, i've tried connecting to a few different ones; mine's a WRVS4400N, i also tried a dlink and my friend's linksys. Still looking around, can't find anything

Does anyone know if there's a way to force wlan0 to connect at 802.11G? i'd like to continue running a G/N mix on my router if possible...
