strange bottlenecks on "fast" system

dear all,

I have an Athlon 1462 Mhz / 384 DDR RAM / 40G ATA hard drive / 64MB on board Nvidia G Force 2 / system.

I notice that data transfer rates are not what they are under MS. When copying from CD to HD or one dir to another I get wildly fluctuating transfer rates and spend a reasonable amount of time looking at the word "stalled".
This applies both to web browsers and internal data transfers....

Any ideas ????

Is this a cache setting that needs enlarging ???

many thanks in advance

First of all go to a terminal and type hdparm -Tt /dev/hdyourpartition as root. You should see speeds >100 MB/sec for cache and >20 MB/sec for read/write.
If that is ok you might have the same problem I do.Some of my partitions are fragmented so badly that the drive spends more time searching around than actually writing or reading. If you got a new install that can't be a problem.

thanks for that,
i ran the test,

results are as follows:

buffer-cache read 128MB in 0.40 seconds 320MB/sec
buffered disk read 64MB in 19.x seconds 3.24MB /sec

i re-ran the test to doulbe check and the results were more or less identical.

(It is a 1 week old installation)

during boot i see a line thats says something along the lines of "ide bus presumed to be 33mhz, overwrite with idebus=xxx"
is there a connection

Seems you got a problem with the settings for your drive.Try hdparm -Ii /dev/bla to see what is enabled and not.hdparm gives you a look at the options available.Probably dma isn't enabled.hdparm -d enables dma for the device. What distro is this - I didn't have this problem out of the box for a long time. You might want to do a search here for hdparm.
