Stopping duplicate mails being sent from a server

Hi,

I have report running through a Unix server. In this it takes out certain data of the database and sends it to each of the user's mailbox. But if some user replies or has set his out of office reply then this server keeps on sending him the same mail again and again. I need stop it. All the mails go through a mail exchange server.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Nagendra

Which programs are you running? Depanding on whether you use sendmail, postfix, qmail, or any of the other many mail servers the advice would be different.

One lazy way out without thinking is to put a 'reply to' address on the outgoing notices which you can then use to accept mail for, & filter to /dev/null.

Isolate what exact set of replies you want to block. Is it replies to a specific server, mail address or what? Replies in general? Can you not configure the reporting server to ignore replies?

I send a mail through a program using mailx which derives the mailids from a table. But if a user has set out of office reply then the server will send that mail to the user mulitple times for days. Its like the mail is being bounced back to user again and again. How do i stop it?

Thanks

Most mailers cater for that by having a bounce or doublebounce setting. If you deliver locally via procmail, can you grep for the mailid or something?iirc, the one sending the mails generates a mailid. When you're getting a reply the mail id might allow you to filter it.
