stoopid noob here
ok, i installed mandrake 9.2, this is the first time i have ever messed with linux.
im at my "desktop", if thats what you all call it. I have read that nvidia driver install thread, but you all are talking about stuff thats way over my head, im used to the windoz "double click and it installs itself" but obviously that dont work in linux. I have DL'd the correct "drivers" for my nvidia Mobo, also my Geforce3Ti500 card (the .rpm file and the .run file for my GPU) i am also trying to get my LAN to work, its on the mobo, when i install that .rpm thing, will the lan install too? and how da #$@# do i get a game to work? i want BF1942 to work.... but like I said before... linux dont know what an .exe file is |
|
ok, ty for those links.
now how i use .rpm files? |
In the shell, rpm -ivh file_name for installing..
You'd better get some references before using Linux...You'll get lost without them in hand... |
whats a good book to read up on linux?
|

here are some doc on mandrake's site http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/fdoc.php3 this is also good http://rute.2038bug.com/rute.html.gz something else worth looking at http://www.linux.org/lessons/index.html |
O'Reilly's great!
But, O'Reilly expects a small amount of knowledge before hand (They're not made for new people.) I don't neccesarily believe reading a book will do good. My approach is just to ask questions. LinuxQuestions is a great source of answers. I used trial and error, I had to install, unistall, and reinstall Slackware 8.0 when I first got it. 6 times before I understood what I was doing. |
My only book on Linux is Sybex's Linux Complete. A bit out-dated I think, but quite helpful.
What about wrox's books? I found many of their books being great... |
omg, TY xquizit
im reading it now, and it explains WTF is going on.. a kind of noob guide |
