Still No Sound

First of all, my tag is out of date. No more Red Hat 9, now running Fedora Core 3 with all available upgrades. I did an LQ search for both "sound" and "audio" and tried everything (I think).
Here's the info: Dell Dimension 2350 PC I've had since Dec. 2002. I unmuted each element of alsamixer, which came with the distro, and unmuted all of gnome volume control. Soundcard is intel8x0. Ran modinfo on soundcore, it shows it's there, but when I ran modprobe on the file modinfo listed - /lib/modules/2.6.12-1.1381_FC3/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko -
I got "soundcore.ko does not exist". lsmod also shows it's there. I also ran modprobe on each of the following:
snd-intel8x0, snd-pcm-oss, snd-mixer-oss, snd-seq-oss.
Then I did depmod -a alsaconf. Still no sound. I don't know what else to do.

First, go to "Edit Profile", and correct your tag...
Second, what lsmod says? Third, did you try with command

Code:

modprobe soundcore
? It looks like you specified full path, which is not "THE RIGHT THING". modprobe dislikes it.

Sound should work, but doesn't

OK, I ran "modprobe soundcore" instead of the full path, and this time got no error message. However, still no sound. I've followed all the instructions I could find, and I should have sound. Any ideas? BTW sound works fine in my other OS on the same computer.

I fixed it

Finally, I have sound. I did not realize that although the alsa driver came with my system, alsa-lib and alsa-utils did not. No wonder alsaconf didn't work. This was not intuitive, and I had no way of knowing. I really did try for a long time before posting. Thank you all.
