# ping. <ip-adress-of-router/modem> showed this:
----------------------

sorry to be not clear : " <ip-adress-of-router/modem> " i meant to put your modem-adress ( 192.186.0.1) there....

but eht is up and running.
so now the adsl-part.....

do you also have a kind of splitter between modem and phone-connection ?
( to connect both phone and modem to the wall-outlet.....)
if so....i remember i had that one wrong at first.

and the password, did you set that yourself ?
there always should be a way to correct that ......( manuals..? )

I'm getting confused between the pings and the ips now, and I'm getting a series of syntax errors and "commands not found" when I try this one. I'm beginning to flag too as it's way past my bedtime. In the morning I have to go to the dentist (isn't life a bundle of laughs?) but I'll look for responses to this again after that.

Goodnight and sweet dreams to all,
Tom

VICTORY!!! The title of this thread is now untrue. I'm sending this from Linux via the ethernet router, so I've got everything to work. I've already gone to my football club's fan site (www.bsad.org for Watford, if you must know) and now I'm here.

Fantastic to be able to start work with this at last. My eternal gratitude goes to everyone who helped me get past the obstacles along the path.

Tom
