Status from Tape units

I am able to get general status ( i.e. load point, eot, eof). Need to
be able to get error status other than the -1 returned from the read. Is
there any way to get specific cause of errors from the tape unit in linux?wagner@dawson3d.com

Need to provide alot more information than "the tape unit in linux". How about what kind of tape unit? Attached to what kind of interface? What distro and version of Linux?

Have you checked with the tape hardware vendor? Do they have an API or driver for Linux that provides these things???
