Stat IP setting hostname
I'm going to go read up on hostnames, DNS and all that other good stuff in a minute but I gotta ask. I'm in the middle of setting up Fedora Core 2 and I'm at a loss for what to set for my hostname. I have a static IP address that I am assigning to my linux box so I set that along with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 I've got my gateway and my DNS addresses set up but I have no idea what to do for my hostname. Can I just put whatever or leave it blank or what?

Get yourself a free domainname from dyndns.org
Then be creative and give the machine a unique host name. Something like core, or silver or whatever. Then ur machine's host name will be real-world and looks something like: core.mydomain.dyndns.org or silver.mydomain.ath.cx All depends ;) Jestah |
Ok, I'm still clueless.
I got a Static DNS from DynDNS.org so now I have my static IP address set to servemo.dyndns.org When I run ifconfig I get inet addr:216.27.177.163 Bcast:216.27.177.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 my hostname is set to servemo. SHould I change it to servemo.dyndns.org? I tried changing it using hostname -v servemo.dyndns.org but that didn't seem to take or change anything. Dengit, I though I had an idea of what I was doing... Forgot to add, I didn't install Gnome or KDE. The computer I'm using right now really crawls if I use either, so Xwindows it is. |
*Boink*
Guess that's what I get for posting so late at night... |
Your host name has nothing to do with your "realworld" site name. You can name your box anything you like, and still run websites or whatever to a different name. Making your hostname the same as your site name gives no benefits whatsoever.
As the people ahead of me posted, it basically is a matter of choice, what even name suits your fancy is fine, and won't effect anything. Peace, JimBass |
