startx Problem (Urgent)


I use a Linux 8.0 version(A cut down red hat version)
Till now I was running the GUI (Gnome) nicely. suddenley , one day,
the problem arose that when I enter startx at the command prompt(in text mode) A blank and dark screen and comes back to the command prompt(in text mode) stating the error as
default font fixed not found I thought There is a problem with X server.But when I run 'XTest' tool, A GUI shows for 10 seconds

What I shall need to do
Either update version of xfs using rpm -UVh
or the entire XServer package

Please need a help so as to do a project

hmm I'll quote the last few lines of the error message:

I don't know either, sorry... but it looks like there's something wrong with the font configuration!

If you install XFree86 version 4.4 (the latest) you will have no need for a separate XFont server, thus making life easier.

Download the binary version of XF86 from www.xfree86.org and install that. It comes as multiple tarballs, an 'extract' binary and an XInstall.sh script.

I've got the same problem just now... playing around with security levels and permissions, all of the sudden my X severs fails to initialize saying:
"could not open default font 'fixed'"

I simply commented the following line from /usr/X11/XF86Config-4:
#unix /:-1
and now it seems to work, but I have a strange feeling about some side-effects... we'll see...
