startx problem on dell 2650 with RH 7.1

i have seen numerous issues on this.. but none of the given solutions work for me..

i have installed redhat 7.1 on my dell inspiron 2650. as geforce 2 go is not identified, generic is selected. startx will give flickering screen.. searched sites for help.. then installed NVIDIA 2313 kernel and GLX drivers.. edited XF86Config-4 to change from "nv" driver to "NVIDIA" driver... (still maintained "geforce 2 (generic)" in XF86Config-4 ).

startx still gives flickering screen, only this time there is some bluish background to say things are improving !!!

can somebody confirm if RH 7.1 cannot make X work with geforce 2 go ?? should i download RH 8 or 9 ??

First I would go into the XF86Config-4 and change "NVIDIA" to "nvidia" because I believe the NVIDIA module is in lower case letters. Also while going thruough your XF86Config-4 make sure you have a line load glx and if you have "load GLCore" put a "#" in front of that line and also "load dri". This should get you going. Plus I would go into my bios and change the monitor to use only LCD or you will get a lot of flickering when you drop out of X. If this still doesn't work I would go to the NVIDIA site and download the latest driver, it is a shell script so once you have it downloaded cd to the directory you downloaded it to and at the console type sh NVIDIAXXXX where the X is just the rest of the file name of what you downloaded.

If this still doesn't work, download RH 9 and it will support the GeForce 2 Go right out of the box but with out GL support.

If this doesn't work you can always checkout my website where I posted how I went about getting RH 9 to work on my Dell Inspiron 2650.

thanks for the reply. i already have "nvidia" in small letter.... "load glx" is available, and "load dri" and "load glcore" are commented as suggested in NVIDIA's release notes..

i have also edited /etc/modules.conf and added line:
options NVdriver NVreg_Mobile=1

stilll, with no result..

what i found today is that i used NVIDIA's i386 UniProcessor RPMs for kernel and GLX, whereas i have a i686.. do not know if that could make a difference..

anyway, i am downloading RH9 and shall install that.. guess 7.1 is old and some of the customized RPMs do not support 7.1

other details:
linux kernel: 2.4.2-2
XFree86: 4.0.3
