Unhappy startx gives fatal error:"screen not found"

hello!
well this is my first time installing linux.
and as expected i got stuck!
i have installed slackware 11 distro.
the basic linux kernel installed is huge26.s
i have a compaq presario SR1720L.

(and i have tried the minimum possible settings)
but when i type "startx" after logging into root, it shows a fatal error:screen not found.
or
sometimes (on reconfiguring the xorgconfig) it just gives me a weird screen with a weird coloured box at the center which responds to the movements of the mouse.i beleive that is the GUI that comes up on "startx", but why is it showing so?
please help me out here

and a new development just took place!
this time (again on reconfiguring xorgconfig)
the screen went blank on start x
i just cannot understand what is goin on

Hey!

I would not recommend slackware for a first distro.
One of the most user-friendly, simple and "just-works" distro there is is called (k)ubuntu.

If your still commited to using slackware then try the fallowing things:

There may be a file called Xorg.conf (or similar). This is normally in /etc/X11. Try renaming it to '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkup'. This somtimes works beacause the defaults a certain distro gives are not necessaraly the best.

If this does not work, you can rename it back to xorg.conf and post your log file (normally /var/log/Xorg.0.log or similar). A log file will probably tell us what's going on.

Try to use dpkg-reconfigure xfree86, here you can use the wizard to change all settings of xfree86 (xwindows). No screens found means xwindows cannot find any usable videomode suitable for your system.

Or on Slackware, xorgsetup or xorgconfig.

tried it all!!

hey
thanks for the suggestions..
but,i tried xorgsetup and xorgconfig
but it says no screens found for xorgconfig and
for xorgsetup a strange screen appears with nothing on it just coloured boxes.
can i use the xorg.conf of some linux live distro??
i tried to copy the XF86Config file generated by knoppix(an old live disc of knoppix called games.knoppix)and renamed it as xorg.conf.
but that failed as well..
how do i copy the log file to post it?
i am using windows xp along with slackware(that is how i am able to veiw this site)
does it have anything to do with the compaq presario pc that i am using?do i have to alter some video settings?

still stuck up here!Please help!
