startx doesn't just fail, it hangs the computer.

I tried to configure Xorg on Gentoo, but was unsuccessful. I've followed all the steps but the computer hangs on executing startx. Nothing responds. I faced the same problem when I tried to run the Gentoo live disc, that is why I started from the minimal release. But I face the same problem again. Using the file produced by XOrg -configure also hangs the system.

Post installation, when I enabled framebuffer (vga=792 in lilo.conf) and tried to startx, I got an error message I cannot recollect, but that's an issue we can look into later since I've disabled it at the moment.

Please note that I didn't autoload kernel modules as mentioned in the Gentoo handbook, because it didn't ask me what modules to autoload.

This is my X0rg log on startx. I've highlighted like this the EE and the WW sections for your convenience. I removed the vga=792 in lilo to prevent the framebuffer error.

We need to know about your video card. Which is this? Have you tried Slack on this machine?

(EE) open /dev/fb0: No such file or directory

However - you seem to be hanging at EDID.
Perhaps edit /etc/X''/xorg.conf to add vertical refresh and horizontal sync rates?

Did you grab that log file after hitting the power button and rebooting the machine? Have you confirmed that the machine is unavailable via ssh after it seems to hang?

Simon Bridge,

This is my video card: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955
I didn't mention it because it was there in that Xorg log I posted. Slackware worked on my computer.

I ran Xorg -configure to generate a basic configuration file (without the frequency). I don't know the values of the frequencies, because I ran XF86Config (and allowed it to do its work). But I know that the computer won't hang due to lack of frequency information because Slack never hanged. I don't even remember how I got the frequencies (if I set them) for my laptop screen.

Adam, I grabbed the file on reboot. I'm not on a network so I can't do test is via ssh, but if my Caps Lock key doesn't respond even after 10 minutes, I'm pretty sure that the computer has hanged.

Thanks for you time.

It's very odd (though not impossible) that X would hang an entire machine when direct rendering isn't even available. I guess the first thing I'd check is if the machine continues to hang if you recompile your kernel and actually enable the radeon DRM modules.

I just did and that error disappeared. Now, I have fewer errors, but a valid explanation for why the computer does not respond has probably been given. I have no idea how though.

This time I ran startx through the file generated by XOrg -configure

Xorg detected your mouse at device /dev/input/mice.
Please check your config if the mouse is still not
operational, as by default Xorg tries to autodetect
the protocol.

Your xorg.conf file is /root/xorg.conf.new

To test the server, run 'X -config /root/xorg.conf.new'
If my mouse and keyboard got disabled, then the computer couldn't respond. Oh, my screen is still blank.

You're being a great help.

Xorg uses hald to detect and enable input devices these days. Do you have hald running? If not, you can still use the Mouse and Keyboard devices in your xorg.conf file by adding this line to the ServerLayout section:

Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

Do you get the blank screen if you simply run 'xinit /usr/bin/xterm' (assuming, of course, you have xterm installed in /usr/bin)?

I have hald running. I just added this to my xorg file:
Code:
Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AllowEmptyInput" "off"
EndSection
I don't know what happened, but now even though the computer is unresponsive for sometime, I can switch between terminals after a while. This is very good progress. The screen is still black.

I do not have xterm installed. Is this necessary? I installed through "emerge xorg-server" as per the Gentoo XOrg guide

Did you try starting X with 'xinit /usr/bin/xterm' as I suggested?

I would recommend installing xterm to test with.

Configure the kernel without radeonfb. You might also remove all the lvds sections. I'm not an expert, but it looks like the machine might be trying to use one of the external video connectors. Usually Xorg.0.log will list several available video configurations for the lcd, and then the one it's using. Your lcd isn't even being configured. One trick is to put a monitor section in xorg.conf with these two lines

option HorizSync 28-43
option VertRefresh 50-65

but make the numbers proper for your lcd. And if you hit CTRL+ALT+BKSPC during your X -config /home/$user/xorg.conf.new test, you should get the terminal back. You can also use randr to specify what video device to use, and what screen size and resolution. You can even add screen configurations using randr, and then select the custom resolution.

If you ever want to use an external monitor, or S-Video out for a TV, you will need to know the randr program.

The kernel radeonfb module can interfere with ATI's drivers. So when the ATI proprietary driver fails to load, DRM fails.

I just ran your test and I get a small white colour terminal in the middle of a black screen and the X mouse cursor. That's really a morale booster, but what do I do next? I really can't thank you enough for bringing me till here.

AwesomeMachine, thank you for your time, but I don't use an external connector since it's a laptop.

If your mouse and keyboard work now, then X is setup properly. I'm not particularly familiar with Gentoo, but it sounds like 'startx' is trying to start X applications that may not be installed on your machine. I suggest installing whatever window manager you want to use under X, and then add the necessary commands to your users ~/.xinitrc file.

Brilliant, I copied the Xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and now on execution of startx I get three terminals. I guess I need to configure the Xorg.conf file. Is there a way to determine the frequencies of the monitor?
