Starting X server on mandriva 2006

every time I enter: startx I get the following messages on my screen.

execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
giving up
Connection refused (errno 111): Unable to connect to X server

I am brand new to linux and cannot figure out what to do. During the installation I had all these nice looking graphics up and then when it finished and restarted it was all text. I looked up on some forums and sound out about startx and tried it but the above information is all that I am able to get.

Can anyone help me get the graphics running on my computer?

You've got 2 graphics cards in computer? I'm assuming that yes, because i has founded
this in your output:

(--) PCI:*(0:19:0) Trident Microsystems TGUI 9440 rev 227, Mem @ 0xfea00000/21, 0xfedf0000/16
(--) PCI: (0:20:0) S3 Inc. 86c775/86c785 [Trio 64V2/DX or /GX] rev 22, Mem @ 0xf8000000/26

try remove one card or reconfigure as mentioned above and select second card S3 Trio to use.

Unhappy :newbie:

Thanks Guys! I did both and now it is up and running. I just can't get my mouse to work now.

I have tried using several different configurations and it still doesn't want to work. And using KDE without a mouse is a pain!

Any ideas?

try edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf in this section:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" <<<<<<<<<<<<< probably you've got here /dev/mouse or similar change for above for /dev/input/mice
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" <<<<<<<<<< this is for middle roller, if you have no, add this
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection
