Did you install postgresql when you installed the OS or by source?

It looks like the server is working as expected. The server is running in the foreground and waiting for something to happen so it just looks like it is hanging. If you open up another console window and create a database or something with psql (the console client program) you will see additional messages.

The following command will run postmaster in the background. Those messages that you see will be in the file logfile. The postgres user needs write permissions to what ever directory the logfile will be saved.

/usr/local/pgsql/bin/postmaster -D /usr/local/pgsql/data >logfile 2>&1 &
