starting


i just FINALLY got mandrake install

i get to the login password
then
HOW do i get into xwindows?
i am an idiot to linux thats for sure
but i thought it just loaded up

but i guess it doesn't
so what command must i type ????

try startx....

I would have thought Mandrake automatically loads into a GUI mode, (SuSE does) but maybe not... anyway, give that a whirl.

as an alternative, log in as root, then type kdm. Usually, mandrake defaults to a gui, but if your video card wasn't set up correctly, it might go back into command line mode. In this case, when you type startx or kdm (gdm if you prefer GNOME), that won't work either. It will flicker a few times, then an error should pop up.

........... and if by default you want boot into graphical mode, as Root user in a Konsole open /etc/inittab

change the

id:3:initdefault:

to

id:5:initdefault:

ie change the 3 to a 5 in this line

and save the file

reboot
