Problem
Floppy start up yields a stopped functioning computer with the following line "probing SCSI... aic7xxx0"
At this point the computer is locked up and I have to turn it off.
A restart causes the same action

You said "floppy startup".... What do you mean by this? And what do you mean by knoppix 3.1 cdr? You will need to fully explain what you are doing here, since this is very misleading to me.

Best to start off with failsafe boot option and see if that works.

Use boot option noscsi or see knoppix cheat codes for correct statement.

I think I'd get a knoppix 3.3 at least but a 5.x or 6.x should still work.

About that time there were two issues. One is that linux was changing from hdx to sdx and the second was a goofy atapi deal. Might have to use the noatapi.
