start service - mail daemon

Root is not getting alerts and other messages such as warning from kpkg on installs, kpkg gives an error when trying to send mail. In my hd install of kanotix I believe the mail daemon is not started at boot by default. I don't see smail in inetd. Typing mail in console for either root or user just gives a "no mail" message but doesn't say anything about the server not being started. So I am not sure. Googling and other search brings up a lot of security issues and a great deal above my newbie head. Is it safe to turn on mail just for such messages to root and if so how do I do it? Also, I have guarddog running and haven't made any changes to local (which I believe is what this would be falling under)
