Question Standby (power saving) and scripts/batch jobs

No, I am not going to ask about issues with getting the PC to go into or out of standby (suspend). There is more than enough discussion of that topic and someday I hope it will be a non-issue. Trusting that that day will come...

Can a Linux PC be put into and waken out of standby with a shell script scheduled with cron? When running Windows I can schedule a job which will wake the PC, do some work such as making backups, virus and malware scanning, free space wiping etc. and then put the PC back in standby for power saving purposes.

Does this sort of methodology exist in the Linux world?

TIA,

Ken

You can schedule wake-ups by properly settings the BIOS and then having a script executed on power-up, or you can make use of ACPI-wakeup. The problem is that it is a bit dependent on your kernel version, I used to have /proc/acpi/alarm and it now disappeared on my system... anyway I found this good reference:
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/index.php/ACPI_Wakeup

The main problem is, there is not a daemon or program that does this all automatically, although it is not very difficult to write down your own script.

Thanks clvic,

I guess ACPI is a topic I need to become educated in.
