Cool SSH and WindowsXP firewall

I am a new member. Linux is not my smart suit (yet). Here's the issue. I use SSH to connect to some HP linux boxes distributed around the world. For SSH (SSHSecureShellClient-3.2.9) to successfully connect I have to disable the WindowsXP firewall completely on my machine.
I have tried leaving the firewall enabled with added ports (22) and applications as exceptions but the SSH fails to connect unless I disable the firewall completely.
Has anyone experienced this before and, hopefully, arrived at a solution they can share.
many thanks
