SSD File System Partitioning
 

Hi!
I was just wondering if it was possible to create partitions on SSDs, to use for multiple operating systems. (I'm slightly suspicious that it's not possible, as I don't seem to find much helpful material about this on the web.) If it is possible, do they have to be MLC SSDs with fixed partition sizes, or can SLC SSDs also do it with any partition size?

(Oops! I just realised that I'll be caught out using Windows XP instead of my Mint 7 Xfce Live CD! The shame!)

SSD can be partitioned just like a regular hard disk. It can take any type of partition.

^ i guess i dont understand the question but i think ssd's are harddrives just like any other sata, ide, usb, ... harddrive.

why are you then unable to run a live-cd; they dont need to be able to read/ write the harddrive (that is one of the benefits of live-cd's)

SSD stands for Solid State Drive. Most SSD hard drives looks like a SATA laptop hard drive but they have no moving parts. It is a circuit board with memory chips. Have you ever seen one?

my point was that it doesnt matter what type of harddrive (a harddrive is a harddrive -- same way a car is a car. whether it's a chevy or ford, you should be able to drive to work just the same).

The reason I ask is because the design of SSDs makes it's total size inherently 2^x, like RAM, whereas HDDs can have any desired size. So I wasn't sure if the "disk" could be "split".
(I can run the Live CD, but I'm considering installation in the future on a laptop with an SSD.)
(MLC is Multi-Level Cell, and SLC is Single Level Cell. You can check Wikipedia for a better explanation of pros/cons than I can give!)

Sorry if my response sounded as if I were suggesting your response had a bad demeanor! lol! Like you say, it's sometimes hard to convey the intended emotion (although smileys can help, of course. :)). In any case, I wasn't being defensive, but just my jolly old self! So I meant to convey a sense of being bright and cheerful at having an answer while pretending to demean myself at my trivial n00b mistake...
I hope that made sense... in any case, for clarity, this message is not in any way sarcastic... including this statement... and this one... and this one...
