Question Squirrelmail

Hi,

I am new to Squirrelmail and using it just for testing purpose right now on a network with 2 computers. Issues i am facing are :

1. I am not able to login as root user.
2. I selected the localhost in domain name under server settings but still i am able to view the mails on my other system , on same LAN.
3. How do i change the themes, right now i have to chnage the theme using the /var/lib/squirrelmail/userxyz.pref.

Any ideas!!!!!!

1) NEVER, EVER, EVER log in as ROOT. Ever. Its a serious security threat, and it's probably (sensibly) disabled within Squirrelmail. Don't you know that any passwords are sent as clear 'unencrypted' text over the net, so that anyone with a packet sniffer on the wire could see the password? - Big mistake!

2) I don't understand your question here. What is the problem?

3) Run squirrelmail-configure at the shell, or check out the /etc/squirrelmail configs

Hello,

Sorry for the delay..

Yeah, i know that its dangerous to login as root, I wz just asking because of my curosity, I am not going to do it on live n/w...tnx for the suggestion

For the second question, i read somewhere that localhost setting should be changed in Domain Name for accessing the mail from other computers, but now i know its a way to set the reply address (pls correct me if i am wrong).

Also, i will follow what you suggested for changing the themes and will let u you know....: )

Tnx a millions for your help....

localhost should always ping to 127.0.0.1 - it's your local box and can only be pinged on the local machine.

you can add another hostname and fully qualified domain name in your /etc/hosts file if you intend on accessing it on the net - but be aware that for all other machines to know about it you must add the same entry in their /etc/hosts files. If you are making a web server up, then you will need to install a dns server (eg bind) and control your domains from /etc/named.conf. Then you can point all your machines at that dns server and any domains on it will automatically resolve.

BTW: This is a bit out of depth for most newbies!

Cheers,

Al.

Hello,

I am not able to chnage the themes. When i run config.pl, it gives options to change the themes but it won't load the selected theme unless i change it in /var/lib/squirrelmail/userxyz.pref. Also, /etc/squirrelmail only contains config.ph and that is done by config.pl...
