You set the ftp_proxy environment variable just like the http_proxy.
Maybe you should update to squid 3.0 if you have problems with non-anonymous ftp.

I just installed squid for the first time on the weekend. I'm using it on a crossover cable and the proxy is set in firefox, because I wasn't aware of these environment variables. So I was curious to see if I could use ftp outside of firefox by doing this:

Code:
export ftp_proxy=10.0.0.1:3128
But it doesn't make any difference. Should I have expected it to?

Well, you either have to do transparent proxying (a good howto at
http://www.faqs.org/docs/Linux-mini/...rentProxy.html) or
adjust your browsers network settings to "use system settings".
You will have to do that or similar setup for other browsers as well,
or for gui ftp clients.
