Speedtouch Alcatel USB Modem configure

Hi all, i did a search through all forums regarding help for installiation and configuring of my Alcatel speed touch modem (usb). Found some installiation tips, but just needed to clarify some parts :D.

I am going to download the "Speedbundle" file from linux-usb.sourceforge.net now it says all the neccessary files will be installed automatically, do i just need to click the file and say install?, or do i need to show excatly where the files need to be installed?.

Once installed how do i enter my isp's details?. Is it a simple process of clicking on a file or through konsole?.

How do i load up the internet once eveything is installed and configured, just click on my brower button?

Thanks for help

The speedbundle works by bouncing you off about half a dozen error messages. You need to put a copy of the firmware (alcaudsl.sys, mgmt.o or firmware.bin) in the firmware folder. You need to edit three scripts in the ppp_scripts folder and add your ISP username and password and you have to rename one of the speedtch scripts (depending on whether your ISP uses pppoatm or pppoe) just let the error messages guide you. Sometimes there are worse things than getting an error message, like not getting an error message...

Thanks for reply, will maybe get the guts to actually install something on my linux box soon. My windows machine has alcaudsl.sys on, so thats the easy part lol.

Hello again, I've just read your original post again and realised that I didn't really answer what you asked. I remember with the speedbundle it's triggered by hotplug events. It should connect at boot if it can correctly synthesise hotplug events. Post back if you get stuck and I'll try and help.

Hey Dinerty,
Can I suggest using the speedtouchconf script from sourceforge.net. It's an easy to use/install and a doddle to run. You need the alcaudsl.sys for this one too.
It also asks if you want to connect at boot.

Just my 2cents.

Ahh yea i will go take a look at this now. Thanks for this

edit: I just went to the sourceforge website and took a look at the speedtouch script, it looks great, it says i need to know my isp's vci/vpi?. Unsure what numbers these are?

Andrew Benton 04-24-2004 05:47 AM

Country/ISP VPI VCI
Belgium, ? 8 35
Denmark, Orange 8 35
France, wanadoo 8 35
France, ? 8 67
Italy, ? 8 35
Netherlands, ? 8 48
UK, BTopenworld 0 38
US, BellSouth 8 35

So for the UK it's 0 38

i try this solution with speedtouchconf on suse 9.1 distro.

The installation is OK, the modem driver installed but when i try to connect to the web, i've got this message :
pppp died : pppd options error (exit code2)

can u help me !!! it's a nightmare !!!! i try to connect to my AOL provider since one week !!!!

Andrew Benton 09-14-2004 08:39 AM

"can u help me" - I'm not sure. I've read that AOL can be difficult but I don't know the details as I use Wanadoo.
"pppd options error" - so what does it say in /etc/ppp/options? And the script in /etc/ppp/peers that you use to connect, could you post what it says in that as well
