SpeedStar64 no screens found

Hi I've got an antique hardware issue.
I'm running Knoppix 3.3-11-19, which is Debian. Runs fine from cd, but after the hd install, I get a "no screens found" error when X runs. The card is a SpeedSta64 ISA 2meg DRAM, which requires XF86_SVGA as xserver, svga or cirrus as xmodule. The EE error from X says "module not found" just before "no screens found." According to xfree86 documentation, I'll get no 24 or 16-bit modes; knoppix runs 1024x768x8bits from the cd. I can live with that if it means I get X at all. Any help for a newb?
(Yes, I know it's an antique, but it's all I've got!)
Thanks!
PS, after I get this set up right, it's time for a LFS on all those pre-prepared partitions. Knx install is so I've got a compiler on the drive... Just want to get X working right first, so I can get the compiles right.

Hi snark! Welcome to LinuxQuestions!

The first thing I want is that you please post your XF86Config file here. I'll give you very detailed instructions that will help you get that file on a floppy. It would be interesting to know if you are a complete Linux/UNIX newbie and want that level of detail in the instructions or if you have some previous experience.

Good luck!
Martin

o Log in as root in text mode. If you get to GUI mode when you boot, then you should be able to press ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a text login.

o Go to the directory with the config file with 'cd':
~> cd /etc/X11

o Now you can list the files in that directory with the 'ls' command. The flag '-l' gives more detailed file information. Then to avoid the listing to scroll away to fast we send the output to 'more'.
~> ls -l | more
The character between 'ls -l' and 'more' is the pipe character. I don't know where it is on a U.S keyboard, I use a Swedish kbd. Now you should be able to scroll line by line by pressing the return key. You could exit from the listing with the 'q' key.

o The file with the interesting information could be either a file called 'XF86Config-4' or possibly 'XF86Config'. (If both are there, then the '-4'file is the interesting one.)

o Now copy the file to a floppy. Insert a DOS formatted floppy in the drive and mount it in your file system with this command:
~> mount /mnt/floppy

o Copy the file to your floppy with the 'cp' command:
~> cp XF86Config /mnt/floppy/

o Before removing the floppy and rebooting the system you need to unmount the floppy from the file system:
~> umount /mnt/floppy

Hi again and thanks for the help. I'm not a complete newb, but really rusty on *nices; in 25yrs of engineering, I've used a few, but not for several years. Never got too much into the graphics setup on them, though.
I've tried using several x config uts, such as xf86config, and have even read all the documentation from xfree86.org, and pieced together what I thought was a really clean XF86Config-4, but no matter what version I use, I get the "module not found" "screen not found" error. I'm thinking it's something to do with the fact that it's an ISA card, and somehow it's not being probed and the module fails to load. I don't know how to get modules to load by brute force, or where to put them or find them. I know it's supposed to be the svga module served by XF86_SVGA, which supposedly carries the cirrus module, according to the xfree docs. Anyway, here's the XF86Config-4 from the working Knoppix3.3-11-19 as it runs; it's good for three modes: 1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480, all at 8-bits. I only care about the first; I noticed as Knoppix boots that it's using generic monitor, 28-96 for H, 50-75 for V. I'm sure this ancient Compaq 1024 Color (462) display isn't probable; it's specs say it's good for 30-58 for H, 50-100 for V. I'm ok with setting that up, but need to get the server module issue straight.
Also here's the last page worth of the xfree86.0.log, too:

BTW, what are these last three lines? I've not seen reference to them in the docs...

xfree86.0.log. I'll get around to the howtos on fonts later--gotta have X first. Only care to get Garamond up anyway; I'll steal them over from my w98 partition.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

BTW, I tried setting the default color depth to 8, but got the same errors. I could lose all the modeline and serial and usb mouse stuff, too, since I'm chasing a ps2 wheelmouse, but that's for me to do after this. I suspect it might be dumping the module because of a memory conflict at load time. I'm not sure what all that pci probing/memory smushing is in the log. Seems to me I shouldn't have to worry about that, since the thing works running from ram. Why shouldn't it from the drive install? The card even gives me 16-bits at 1024x768 when in w98, with these same bios/memory settings. I'd rather not change anything there. But I'm stumped as to why the no module, no screens...
Thanks for any help...
