If you have a computer to search or ask help and another to work on (even for a especially for older computers) I like a Debian-netinst... Albinard all those are based on Debian (plus apt\aptitude+ probably has the most available) so why not start small and learn what desk top environments, window managers and apps you like instead of letting others decide for you? Others: Arhc, Slackware, etc...
