Soundblaster 16, FC4 - card detected, but no sound

Hi!
First off, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my question, but I'm not sure if it's a hardware issue either, so I rather post it here. If it's not the right place after all, I'm sorry.
So, here's my problem:
I had a working installation of Fedora Core with sound, but then I had to re-install because I messed it up with Windows, and now I don't get any sound output.
I installed the alsa-driver with the "--with-cards=sb16" option, installed alsa-lib, alsa-lib-devel, alsa-utils, and alsa-tools.
Alsaconf detected the card and modified the modprobe.conf file. But the most I got so far was a short beep from gaim which was not the "incoming message" sound. When I try to play an mp3, xmms doesn't even start the file.
Is it possible that there's a sound configuration error in the system?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Tanja

Did you check alsamixer? By default, the sound output level is set to zero on initial installation.

Edit: That may be amixer not alasamixer

Yes, I did; sorry, I forget to mention that.
I do get occasional noises from my speakers; e.g. when I receive an instant message, there's a beep, but it's not the wave file that is specified in the Gaim settings; or there's a short crackle, where a sound output should have been. That's why I thought there might be a wrong configuration that I'm not able to figure out.
