Sound Server

hello everyone

I Just want to know if any of you have had this problem, also need some help with it.

as soon as I startx under Slackware 8.1 there is a message that says:

"sound server informational message
error while initializing the sound server driver
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
The sound server will continue using the null output device"

then I: ls on /dev/d*
and I found many files called dsp..

so, I dont really know what is the problem. therefore there is no sound.

Thank your for your help.

First check and see if the OSS or ALSA modules for your sound card are properly loaded.

ncurses!!

thank you for replying

I already checked the sound card and it seems that Slackware dont know what is my sound card! (sis630)

Then, I have decided to compile the kernel, when I go: make menuconfig there is an error that says, I dont have the ncurses Installed.

At this point of my learning process, I have no idea what it means... I made full install, do I need to reinstall something else?

thank you for replying again.

Mainor.

ncurses is a library that allows text based programs to easy create a GUI kinda

the kernel uses ncurses to allow someone to configure what they want installed and what not to install and such

i have no clue how slackware install things (or if it even has a installer)

but heres the web page:

http://www.gnu.org/software/ncurses/ncurses.html

As an alternative to menuconfig, you can work in a terminal in X and use make xconfig .
