Sound problem - Red Hat 8.0
Every now and then when I try and play a mp3-file using xmms, or a mpg-file using mplayer for that matter, the sound(and video) sounds/looks like it究 being fast-forwarded. It究 quite nice listening to my old mp3-files with high-pitched voices and instruments, but not THAT fun. :)
When I reboot, however, everything is back to normal. So, what is wrong, and what can I do about it? I皂 quite a newbie, so go easy on me! |
real time clock problem?
does the system keep time well? |
Yes, my system keeps time perfectly. By the way, I`ve noticed another (related?) problem: When I try and start xmms the times my machine seems to fast-forward multimedia, xmms cannot locate the propriate plugin for playing mp3-files. But when I reboot everything is perfect.
|
the next time it does that, try to play the same mp3
with mpg123 or mpg321 at the terminal, to see if it is an xmms problem. if mpg123 does the same thing, install alsa and use that for your sound card drivers. |
I甸l do that, but I don系 think that究 gonna solve my problem, cause this is not just an xmms-problem, but also mplayer have the same problem. When I run a mpg-file with mplayer both the sound and video is fast-forwarded. So I don系 thing it究 just a soundcard-problem...

sorry i forgot about the earlier post.
download alsa. it's a set of completely different sound drivers. there are rpm's for your distribution. |
I've had that problem and a reboot solved it and I never had to deal with it again :\
|
How do I find out what kind of soundcard I have?
|
Never mind - I found the name of my driver. But I皂 having trouble installing alsa. I downloaded the rpms from freshrpms.net, but when I install then the only alsa-related program I can start is alsamixer, and event that isn系 working. But again: Is my problem really related to the soundcard? By the way, my computer is a laptop.
|
it almost has to be. go to the alsa website and
read how to set up for your card. you'll need to load the alsa drivers first or remove your others from startup, or the alsa drivers will not be able to load. |
Last night I updated my box to red hat 9.0, and so far so good! No soundproblems in sight. I甸l try the alsa-solution if I encounter problems later on. But thanks for the help anyway, folks!

Red Hat 8.0 Problem solution to XMMS in MP3
Problems with sound :Pengy:
Due to license problems between Red Hat and MP3 sound contractual providers, MP3 support has been removed from it. There's a solution provided by some programmers at http://linux.usc.edu/pipermail/usclu...er/001541.html . This should solve the problem. Otherwise, there's an alternative option (that I'm also considering), OGG Vorbis sound files that give a great quality with good compression. |
