sound problem - no alsamixer

i`m using Vestor linux 5, just installed and i have NO SOUND!
i run "alsaconf", it detected my soundcard and did the configurations. but still on sound! and it not muted.
i run "aumix" and get "command not found".
i run "alsamixer" and get "function snd_ctl_open failed for default: no such file or directory".
i searched about this my "alsamixer" problem, and found, that it has something to do with /dev/snd/controlC0. i looked in /dev/snd/ and i don`t have that controlC0 there. just controlC1, controlC2 and controlC3.
i`m newbie and i need some help!
thank you!

Problem resolved

Hi

I resolved the problem by changing the permissions of file in /dev/snd/ directory to 666 mode.

Code:
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 7 2006-12-02 11:22 controlC0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 6 2006-12-02 11:22 pcmC0D0c
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 5 2006-12-02 11:22 pcmC0D0p
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 4 2006-12-02 11:22 pcmC0D1c
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 3 2006-12-02 11:22 pcmC0D2p
crw-rw-rw- 1 root audio 116, 2 2006-12-02 11:22 timer
Try to do that in your case. (if /dev/snd/ is not available then try to see if /dev/sound/) exists.

Found a better solution

Go to : System->Administration->Users and Groups

Here select the User and Click Properties. In the User Privileges Section:

Check the following :
Use audio devices
Use CD-ROM drives
