sound privilege

hello there...

i have a small question that really has no urgency:

i'm running Knoppix 3.3 and i noticed that i have system sounds/notifications under root, but not under other users. the other users do have sound for playing media files or surfing the internet, but not system sounds...

i tried using KDE control center but all the options for sound are shadowed out... i tried running it from a console as root (su, kcontrol) and i was able to access the options but they never took effect - even after restart.

anyways, i've been playing with this for the past 3 hours so i figured i'd post this - i know how everyone hates newbies asking for help when they haven't even tried to fix it themselves! so if anyone knows a way to give sound privileges to the other users that'd be great... thanks!

Try, as root:
Code:

adduser username audio
where 'username' is the name of the user to whom you would like to give audio priviledges(sp?).

thanks for ur post, but turns out i just needed to start the aRts soundserver at KDE startup... us newbies can be dumb! LoL
