sound issue

so when i turn on my sound to watch movies and videos and stuff, i usually have to turn the master volume up to like 80% to be able to hear it at all. on windows i was able to turn it up to around 20% and i could at least hear some of the sound.

I was wondering if this is just how it is in linux or if i can do anything i can do to make it operate more like windows?

i have a hp dv5-1002nr laptop, and running Fedora 10 Kde defalt sound package i think.

any help would be appreciated
thanks

80% for the master volume is normal. Something is wrong with Windows if you usually turn the volume down to 20%...

If it's still not a high enough volume, there are several audio channels in the sound mixer that are on 50% by default, so you can play with them and raise the volume more. To play with the mixer, double-click the volume icon in the corner of the screen and raise the volume of the "Front" and "PCM" and all... You can also display more channels if you open the preferences dialog and enable them.

Also, check the volume on your speakers. It may be very low because your Windows is screaming ?

ok so 20% may have been a lil exaggerated, but what about 50% and not hearing anything, i mean ive tried turning up everything and i really cant hear anything below 80%. i dont mind just kind of a annoyance sometimes

thanks though i might try out other mixers
