Question Sound issue

Hi everyone,

I have mandrake 9.2 loaded and I just loaded equake for it. I am fairly new to linux and when I run it I get the error:

s_startup: snddma_init FAILED

From what I can tell ALSA is installed on my system (installed when I loaded mandrake) and sound in games like Quake 3 and Postal2 work fine.

I tried the equake forum but all I got were other people with the same issue. I am not sure what this error message means.

I searched all over for this message and nothing helped. Someone recommended reloading a newer version of ALSA, but I am not sure even how to do this or what version I have currently. I read but did not understand a mini install ALSA doc and I think it was an older doc for an old version of ALSA.

Another comment was that this error meant OSS was not installed correctly, well I just allowed mandrake 9.2 to load the defaults for the sound so I would assume ALSA not OSS was installed?

Also, it is the intergrated card on my mobo, Abit NF7-S XP2800+ system.

Any info you can give would be helpful,

Thanks in advance for your help.
