Sound Isnt Working

Hey guys,

Good new I got my version of linux running on the bareacpi.i kernel. There is a problem though my sound isnt working. My assumption is I need a sound driver for my realteck AC'97 on board sound chip. Can anybody help me out, direct me in doing this. B4 with windows i would just go to the compaq website (my computers make), type in S4000NX (my model) and bam driver there. But with linux i assume its not that easy. What can i do?

Yeh gidday.

What kind of motherboard do you have? And did you compile the kernel yourself?

"What kind of motherboard do you have? And did you compile the kernel yourself?"

As far as i can remember i have a GL_VE motherboard type. I cant get the model number at the moment but i hope this helps. I found a site that allows me to download teh driver for my sound chip. Only prob is i dont know how to do the compiling and what not. First day on linux. The site is http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...Software=True. If you can give me any help wats so ever i would greatly appreciate it. Other then that im gonna read through the tutorial section at linuxquestions to see if I can get the programming aspect of linux to compile this baby and get sound so i can hear my games roar.

"have you check if you don't have mutted the channels? Alsa by default have them mutted"

How would I go about checking to see if have or dont have mutted the channels.

You can use alsamixer to check to see if the sound is muted.

Guess you have tried
#alsaconf

The Realtek AC97 are very common so it should be straightforward to get-up. With Slack, alsaconf was the answer for me.
