Sound in Suse 9.1

I am using Suse 9.1. I also have an Athlon XP 2600+ with a MB Biostar M7VIT Pro (VIA KT400/A and VT8235 chipsets). A lot of drivers are marked as "unknown".

If I try sndconfig, it correctly detects a VIA Technologies|VT8233/A/8235 AC97 Audio Controller, but when I tries to test the configuration I don't hear any sound. syslog shows:

kernel: Via 686a/8233/8235 audio driver 1.9.1-ac2
kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:11.5
kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 00:10.2
kernel: via82cxxx: Six channel audio available
kernel: PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:11.5 to 64
kernel: ac97_codec: AC97 codec, id: CMI97 (CMedia)
kernel: AC97 codec does not have proper volume support.
kernel: via82cxxx: Codec rate locked at 48Khz
kernel: via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xE000, IRQ 5

If I try alsa, I get only:

kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 5 for device 00:11.5
kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 5 with 00:10.2
kernel: PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:11.5 to 64

and still no sound. And comercial oss simply gives a kernel panic when trying to use soundon.

Sound works fine in Windows XP, which detects a C-Media AC97 and Midi. Any ideas?

have you tried running a mixer and unmuting sound?
