Sound in DeMuDi, no sound in Ubuntu

I have dual boot with several OS incl. Agnula Demudi and Ubuntu.
Sound in Agnula works fine, but not in Ubuntu.

I have looked here :

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

which helps a little.

In Agnula, I have looked at /etc/modules which lists the sound card driver as snd-seq-midi

However, following the advice on

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting

and

http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Howt...t-HOWTO-8.html

I think my driver is snd-intel8x0. In any case, I have tried both and run

# modprobe snd-intel8x0
# alsamixer

and also separately

# modprobe snd-seq-midi
# alsamixer

According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting this should make it work (I think) but still Ubuntu produces no sound.
Any suggestions please ?

is it mp3's?

Are you trying to play mp3 files? or any sound files?

I ask because Ubuntu distributions (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu) ship without mp3 support. I just learned this myself this week. MP3 is a restricted format and Ubuntu does not include it for this reason.

I installed Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft and was dismayed that I couldn't play my music.

If this is the case you need to run Synaptic and get the libxine-extracodecs and mp3s will play.

Hope this helps.

I am a complete newbie and after spending a day and a half scanning the forums and trying everything under the sun to get sound to work on Ubuntu I finally found the solution.........I unplugged my speakers from on top of my Thermaltake Soprano and plugged it into the back!

Hey presto - sound! :) :)

Thankfully I learnt a lot about Linux throughout the whole process so I don't feel too stupid! Why is it always the easiest things that we find so difficult?

I've checked the BIOS settings but no joy there.

Rickwoods,

Does your sound work with other OS's? Windows or linux... check the plugs if it doesn't, then volume settings. Go to your settings manager and check in sound that it displays your hardware. Get back to me.

All plugs in correct places and sound worked on Win xp. I should have explained that this is a solitary OS computer running just ubuntu

Have you tried going into the sound settings of ubuntu to see if it recognizes that your hardware is there as I suggested? If that doesn't help I recommend following the link a previous poster had linked to, here it is again.

Best of luck.
