sound error new instal

I have installed pclos 2010, really great as it is the only os i could find that booted up my Speedtouch modem as a noob with noob skills. I like it but I have no sound. I think there may be an issue because my integrated graphics have been upgraded. I think my sound card is integrated with the AC'97 ATI which has been upgraded.

At boot I get 'device /dev/dsp can't be opened, sound server will continue using the null output device.' I have tried the pclos forum but sadly I only have some guy telling me all about his machine and his experience and as yet no help or support. Anyone out there able to give a noob some practical step by step advice?

possibly a permissions issue??? When you say at Boot. Are you talking about when you log into the system? type in groups at the command line and post the output. You may need to be added to the Audio Group

thanks bret381, i guess my newbyness is really showing here, when i say boot i mean 'start up' so the message comes when my desktop loads (kde 3). your advice is a little advanced for me, I will go and find out what the command line is and get back to you.

to get to the command line, look for something called terminal in your menu. Look under Applications -> System -> Terminal. This should open the command line. Then you can type in commands to the system.

Oh to add your user to audio do the following as root

Code:

gpasswd -a {USERNAME} audio

jonny lp floppy cdrom polkituser cdwriter audio video users lpadmin dialout puls e-access

that's what is says!

hmm,
go to Control Center -> Sound & Multimedia -> Sound System. Hardware tab, and change the audio device from auto detect to ALSA (which is probably to what it is using anyway) and then click apply, This should restart your sound system. If you recieve the same error message aossibly a problem with ALSA

hi

his groups show puls e-access

I think he means pulse.....not sure what access is

if I am right he has the pulseaudio sound server.

He can then view some snapshots of sound volumes here

http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wikula&tag=PulseAudio

choose the correct sound card here
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wi...ag=PulseAudio2

2) If he does not have pulse running.....he can run the command alsamixer....and unmute his sound and raise volumes similar to this
http://sidux.com/index.php?module=Wi...=MixerSettings

but I do not run his distro so he may need to install alsa-utils to get access to alsamixer

Hopefully his menu has an option for a mixer already?

good luck

yep it gives same message when applying alsa to sound in control center
