Sound Driver Problem:

Hello All,
I recently formatted my system and installed windows and since I have lost my motherboard Cd I was not able to install sound drivers.
And I also installed Fedora 10 on a free Partition. The Problem is that I am not able to play any music files or video files.
Looking for earnest response.
Thanks in Advance

1. Windows sound needs windows solution. You can usually download the drivers off the manufacturers site.
2. fedora ... gnu/linux will not play proprietary, patent encumbered, music and video formats ... out of the box. If you have sounds (i.e. the sound test worked when you installed) and you get an error about missing codecs, then this is your problem.

If this is the case, you are urged to change to using free formats - ogg/vorbis and flac for audio and ogg/theora for video. (note: html5 uses theora for the video tag, which is supported in gecko-engine browsers like firefox - which means no-plugin needed for web video.)

However, it is sometimes desirable to have access to restricted formats.
You can install the support - on the understanding that this may be illegal in the country that you live in.

See: www.fedorafaq.org

If, however, the sound test failed when you installed, we'll need more information.

You'll need to open a terminal and enter the command

lspci

copy the output to your reply.

Most of the motherboard cds are for windows, so it got absolutely nothing to do with linux

You can't play music, videos,.. in fedora, huh? First you need to find if this' a driver problem or something else ?

Is your sound card detected ? (check it on 'sound settings' )

Can you hear any system sounds ? (startup sound, alerts, etc.)

Thanks a lot to all of you!!!
Earlier I was not able hear any sound from my system.
But after opening the cabinet and noting down the model number of my motherboard I downloaded the sound drivers.

Thanks again for your valueable suggestions

Great to hear, that tells us about the windows sounds. How did you do for linux?
