Sound doesn't work with any Linux distro

I am trying to get linux set up on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite M45-S265), and have solved all problems but one: I get no sound output from any distribution. I have previously had sound working just fine on installations of Mepis 3.3, but since upgrading to Mepis 3.4-2, sound is nonexistent.

I have also tried Suse 10, Fedora 4, FoxLinux, Gentoo, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, etc... all with the same results: No sound. I know the card is not broken, as it works perfectly in Windows (I have a dual boot).

I am at wits end here, and would hate to go back to Windows after a very enjoyable 2 years on Linux...any help?

What happens if you open a console, su to root and type in alsaconf?

Hey velibos,

Just a thought... My Dell Inspiron 5150's internal sound (SigmaTel AC97) did not work, but when I went to the terminal and typed "alsamixer", scrolled to the far right, I seen an "External Amplifier". Is that by chance muted? It was when I installed FC4 first, but then I pressed M and it fixed it. My symptoms: The device was detected, and shown everywhere I can see in the GUI, but the "Play Test Sound" never worked.

Hope that helps!

Xavier,

when i run alsaconf, i get the basic alsa configuation program, and after going through setup, the sound "kinda" works...some sounds work for a minute or two, but then quit...and those that do have poor/odd characteristics...for example, a sound indicating arrival of an instant message plays 4-5 times, rather than just once.

boonebytes,

the external amplifier is in order...that was one of the few things i thought of to check myself.
