sound device in use?

Alright, I'm having a couple of problems, mostly with media. Very lame. Sometimes, and from what I can tell, completely randomly, sound stops working. Sometimes when I boot up the computer sound works, sometimes it doesn't. Mplayer :
Code:

[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
alsa-init: 1 soundcard found, using: default

Sound doesn't work with java applets or the standard gnome music player (similar error, device in use).
When I turn off the computer, the computer plays the shut-down sound. I highly doubt it's a hardware problem.
Really, if there's something I can do to figure out what keeps utilizing the sound or whatever I don't mind modifying around it. I just hate rebooting just to get things to work.

stab in the dark here, but I have had problems with ALSA and arts on KDE lately. I disabled ALSA from boot and set it through KDE control panel and it works.... various KDE distros.
