sound card not configured

hi there i'm a little puzzled, at first i couldn't get any sound files to play but as i looked into it more i found that it wasn't any sound files just mp3 files, so i checked the net and found that xmms requires a plug in anyway, i eventually found it and got it working and now xmms says, 'your sound card is not configured properly, you have the correct plug in, no other program is blocking the sound card' and the very puzzeling thing is i have a wav file for my new mail sound and it plays.

can someone help me out.

are you using KDE ?

KDE has a sound server called arts. arts allows multiple programs to play sound at the same time, (a software mixer). however when arts is running, only programs what use arts output will work, and programs that try to directly access the sound card (like OSS or ALSA output) are blocked.

make sure the xmms arts output pluggin is instaled and selected for output.

otherwise, turn off arts in the kde control panel.

without more information, ive no idea whats wrong... however, it usually occurs when people try to mix KDE with media players not rpoperly configureed to run in KDE.
