Post Sound Card Fix Needed?

Hi Guys & Girls,

New to the forum, first post and I am ashamed to admit, its to ask for your help.

Got a sound card issue I haven't been able to resolve.

hda-intel ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (Rev 01)

Shows up in Alsa-mixer as a Realtek ALC861-VD

It was working fine on an old copy of linux slax but when I got a newer copy with linux kernel 2.6.21.5 it suddenly stopped working!

Have run alsaconf, Do you want to modify /etc/modprobe.d/sound and modprobe.conf, hit yes.. And now.. Nope still nothing!

It can see it under lspci as 00:14.2 Audio Device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (Rev 01)

Even tried downgrading the Alsa packages and when that didn't work even went for a full reinstall of the pre-configured OS and tried all over again.

Please advise a complete newbie on where to start so I can resolve this problem as it's mildly anoying not being able to sit in bed and listen to music or watch a DVD.

Thank you all for your help.

Or would booting a copy of the old DVD and copying over the modprobe files to /etc fix the problem? I haven't tried that yet, its one of those copies of slax you can install to disk if you find you like what you see.. I like!

But I am unsure if that would work as I haven't been able to locate the problem and I'm wondering if its the kernel, anyone else had the same problem with linux slackware 12.0 update?

Similar Problem, went off and got the old CD tried copying stuff over but still no sound!

Try alsaconf and aslamixer @ weller it might fix it, then their is a comand to save the settings but I'll be blowed if I can remember what it is, I hope some one can help us both, then we'll save the answer!

Heres a fun command, bit pointless but worth knowing, in the terminal, type at the prompt: PS1="Yes, Master?>" and hit return, cool eh, but its not preferment you will loose that when you restart terminal.

Ok, Laptop specs, cheap as chips, Packard Bell easynote, Linux Kernal 2.6.21.5

Any idea's anyone???

If something is missing and not loading by default what the hell do I type to make it do that?

I was just reading on the ubuntu forums someone has the same card as me, he said, 'I added the following to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file: snd-hda-intel model=laptop

What ALSA base file? Their isnt one in there! That looks like the whole source of my troubles.. Bloody hell, off to load that damn DVD again!
