Similar Problem, went off and got the old CD tried copying stuff over but still no sound!
Try alsaconf and aslamixer @ weller it might fix it, then their is a comand to save the settings but I'll be blowed if I can remember what it is, I hope some one can help us both, then we'll save the answer!
Heres a fun command, bit pointless but worth knowing, in the terminal, type at the prompt: PS1="Yes, Master?>" and hit return, cool eh, but its not preferment you will loose that when you restart terminal.

If something is missing and not loading by default what the hell do I type to make it do that?
I was just reading on the ubuntu forums someone has the same card as me, he said, 'I added the following to the end of the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file: snd-hda-intel model=laptop
What ALSA base file? Their isnt one in there! That looks like the whole source of my troubles.. Bloody hell, off to load that damn DVD again!
