sound card configuration

Hello!

(warning: I am a complete newbie)

I have installed Red Hat 7 in my PC, and what I am trying to do now is to install my sound card. I seem to have successfully installed my Yamaha DS-XG PCI audio CODEC sound card using sndconfig, but there seems to be a "device busy" error each time. Using XMMS can be a pain sometimes because either hangs everything or play soundlessly, probably due to my audio device conflict...(mpg123 doesn't play anything either). I did read the other threads, but I do not quite catch all the details about checking isapnp.conf, pnpdump etc. I get CD music though.

I am not sure where to start checking, so I will really really really appreciate any attentive help.

PS: There is really no way to use a sportster winmodem 56k in linux is there? I am all ears for advice, thanks!
