Sound card and Media Player Problems!

I've been searching this forum for the answers to sound card and media player problems. I ran across a lot! I mean a lot. My problem, I hope isn't that complicated.

I have a fresh good install of Linux Red Hat 9. I tested the sound during installation and it worked. Of course when it comes to practical operation it does't work. Is there something I missed during installation? Also, when trying to view a video clip from nfl.com, not only does it not show the clip, it pulled up another browser and tried to do something. Is there something I missed during installation?

Please help.

To check if the sound is working, try to play an mp3 with xmms :). First, type xmms to see if it's installed. If not, install xmms now (it's in your Redhat CD's ;)). Redhat cannot play mp3's right out the box.

If you cannot hear anything, you need first to get and install a plugin from here:

When it's done, make sure you have a Video Player installed. Xine is a very good DVD, DivX, MPG, VCD player and it's in your Redhat CD's. Type xine at the terminal to see if it's installed. If not, xine is in your Redhat CD's ;).
The best one so far though, is mplayer. If you are unhappy with xine performance check this forum after mplayer :) There're really easy ways to install it with Redhat.

Good luck!
