sound and apt-get install prblems
 

Greetings

I have linux debian installed and I( have a Sound Blaster 5.1 card with surround speakers. however there seems to be sound coming out of one speaker the left how is this and how do I fix it?

also when using synaptic it says that

"You have 1 broken package on your system!
Use the "Broken" filter to locate it."

I click ok (which is the only option) but it just upon the box up not showing me any thing other then that which I have not installed yet. it also does not have the apply button highlighted at this time not unless I select something to be installed.

and when using the apt-get install it says:

Don't dispair. A soundblaster Live 5.1 card can work properly under Linux, I am fairly certain of that.

I am using a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card aswell, and for stereo (2 speaker) system it is perfect for me. I am using OSS as my sound driver though. ( I couldnt get ALSA to work when I tried it, OSS works for me, so I left it at that).

For the problem you have, I would first check the sound volume control mixer panel if your using Gnome desktop. You will find it if you right click the little speaker icon in the right hand end of your bottom Gnome panel. When you right click the icon, a menu will appear, choose "Open Volume Control" from the menu and check that your volume levels, maybe you have one of them turned down?

CTRL+O will also open the Volume Control.

As far as getting the full 5.1 speaker system to work, I would not know, hopefully someone else can advise on that.

I found oss but do not know which one to install

I have debian 3.2 I dl the 200+ iso and installed it via internet so I am sure i have the latest version of debian.

also I made a mistake about the sound card it is sound blaster live 7.1 (if that makes much of a diff)

I have a new problem I used the (oss3993c-linux-x86-v26-regparm) verson and now it shows me this what do I do to fix it

Sound server informational message:

device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
