Red face sound acting predictably sluggish (Ubuntu 8.04)

Hello folks, I seem to be having an issue with my sound and I am hoping there might be an update for my sound driver or perhaps a proprietary driver to make it work better. I did a straight install of Ubuntu 8.04 with for my AMD 5000 computer with 2 Gigs of DDR2 Ram

The problem I am having is that if more than one sound source is going, say for instance Pigin Messenger and say a Firefox window or 2 open with news video clips the sound freaks out, echoes a bit, then goes completely silent. I have to reboot to get my sound back usually. The motherboard that I am using has on-board audio. That board's make and model are: Gigabyte M61PME-S2 All the box says about the audio is "Dual-CH/HD Audio" however, I suspect that it might be standard Yamaha type but I could be wrong. If anyone has any hints, tips, solid fixes, or better sound card recommendations-- any help would be appreciated.
