Check your permissions for /dev/dsp*, /dev/mixer* and /dev/sequencer*.

Then either the path to the sound files is wrong or the permissions on the sound files need chmod.

gnome sounds don't werk in slack 8

Blah, same problem here. Realaudio, xmms, etc etc etc all work. enlightenment sounds work, so do kde's, but not Gnome's. come to think of it, I've never had sound in Gnome on slack werk.

any ideas on what to check. Iknow, Iknow, don't run x as root, but I did, and it still doesn't werk.

In slack there is /etc/opt/gnome/sound/events that contains some config files but I can't see any .wav files anywhere. I'd say that they were not installed, you might need to do a search for them.
