Sound???

When I login, I get a error saying that the sould i/o is not working. Audio CDs work fine, but other than that, I have no sound :(

I talked to a friend who knows a ltiile about Linux and he said to run sndconfig, when I did that it said it was going to play a sample, but my speakes just made a crack and then nothing.

The sound card is a Sound Blaster Live. In the Hardware Browser, it says that its a SB Live! EMU10000 and that the driver is EMU10k1

The emu10k1 driver is the correct one for the SB Live! I have the same card. What distribution of Linux are you using? RedHat/Mandrake/Slack? sndconfig isn't all that reliable anyhow. You could look in your /var/log/messages file for better error report. Check to make sure that the module is loading at startup and see if there are any errors there also...A few more specifics will help us...

I'm running Red Hat 7.2

The error is:

Sound server info message

Error while initializing the sound driver:
Can't start sound i/o

The sound server will continue, using null output device.

Also, messages id kinda long, what exactly am I looking for?

Sound with Linux is like my mom used to say.
Eather you Shit or Get Off the Pot
I got 2 sound cards one is a Phillps that I can convert into a Yamaha Tbird, Then I got a Sound Blaster 16 haha it's old I know one I use with Windows the other with Linux now If I reformat
and take out the Phillps PIC card and leave in the Sound Blaster I will have sound with Linux.
Then all's I gots to do is install the Phillps later.. TO use with windows... I know INVADA Video and SOund cards are very good with Linux...

Here's a thought. Have you tried removing your s/c? If the defauly install of RH7.2 runs kudzu on boot, then removing the s/c should force it to remove all previous configs for it. Then, simply put it back in again and hopefully kudzu will find it and config it properly. I'm running Mandy 8.1 with a SBLive Value and it works like a treat (almost). If this still doesn't work, there are SBLive 'drivers' around, but personally I never got these to work.
