Soon to be first time Linux user - Question about USB Flash Drives
 
Hi,

This weekend I plan on getting rid of Windows Vista for good and installing a fresh Ubuntu 9.04 OS. I have never really used a Linux distro before so I am pretty new. I have been reading up on it and to be honest I really can't wait to get away from Windows OS (I really don't want to dual-boot either).

Anyway I tried doing some searches for my question and either can't find a good response or its just an outdated (by years) thread.

Currently, I make frequent use of a USB flash drive to transfer my school files between my personal laptop and my university's school computers (They currently run Vista Business). I'm not too worried about file conversion because all of our school's computers run MS Office 2007 but also OOo 3 as well.

Currently the flash drive is just plug and go between the two computers. When I connect it to Ubuntu (Mount it might be the correct term?) will it show up with little to no problems and allow me to transfer in a similar way? (The flash drive is currently in a fat32 file system).

Like I said I've never done too much stuff in a Linux OS before but I just want to ask about this before I install this weekend.

Ubuntu usually finds the drive and automounts it for you. If it does not, you can edit your fstab file to recognize and automount it. This is a very easy procedure that you can ask about here if need be if and when the time comes.

Thanks so much. I was hoping it would auto-mount it. Just wanted to make sure before it at least works for my purpose before I did anything.

You could also just boot from the Ubuntu Live CD without installing it, then plug your flash drive in to see if it works. It should auto-mount and you should be able to access all of your data. I've never had a flash drive that I haven't been able to mount in linux.

Funny thing about that...

I would have done that but my school has a 3GB a day bandwidth limit which usually doesn't effect me but I forgot about it the other day and went over it.

Anyway I'm limited to 500MB a day for the week and the DL for the live CD is about 700MB I believe right?

And only use of the schools computer for internet, not my own.
