sony vaio 128 memory.. what is best linux dist?

gday folks.
I have a sony vaio pentium 4 with 128 memory. (the memory is an old rambus memory which is hard to get and expensive).
i would like to install linux to hopefully make it run at least usably.

i have tried the ubuntu variants and xubuntu runs slow. but DOES install.
open suse does not install.

any suggestions for a good linux distribution that will work with this computer?

You might want to try out something like DSL (Damn Small Linux.) It is designed to run on old computers and should run quite fast on your computer.

If that does not work or you don't like it I am happy to give some more suggestions.

Good luck!

well I think this is a miss post pentium 4 and 128 mb of ram. I dont think I ever seen a mBoard for a p4 that could ever use 128 mb chip. Do they make such a small chip for a p4 board of any type if so. puppy linux 2.01 will scream on it.

Rambus

I have a 800 mhz P3 with 128Meg of ram thats been running Slackware 10.2 for about three years, and it works fine. This is using the version of KDE that was with that CD set.

Also, I have a couple P4 boxes with RAMBUS stuff and know exactly what you are talking about.

debian install

ok i tried a debian install and it seems to be working.
tried dsl and it works but has not much to work with.
Yes there actuallyis a pentium 4 with 128 memory.
it was like that when i got it with windows ME..
the memory was a new type of memory then and by the time i decided to get new memory it was expensive and lol wasnt worth it.

so will see how debian goes. so far is going ok with gnome desktop

If you like Debian, but Gnome feels too slow, you might consider installing another desktop.
Xfce, and fluxbox would probably be good choices. My laptop has a 1+GHZ processor, and 256MB of RAM, and it's doing a good job of running Xfce 4. Fluxbox is quite a bit faster tho.
